Big Ten Mid-Season Reports: Indiana Hoosiers
We have not reached the midway point of the NCAA season yet, but it is almost conference play time for the Big Ten. The college basketball regular season is really split in to two parts, the non-conference schedule and conference play. With one part almost done, let’s take a look back at what has happened for each team and what will happen in the next half. Next up are the Indiana Hoosiers.
Indiana, based off of their extremely high preseason expectations, has had a disappointing start to their season. They are 11-1, with their lone loss to Butler in overtime. The Hoosiers are ranked no. 5 in the country and are still one of the most talented teams in the country. Every Indiana win has been by double digits, even wins over Georgetown and North Carolina. Indiana has been dominant for eleven of their twelve games, with an average margin of victory of 29.8 points.
Although preseason player of the year candidate Cody Zeller may not have lived up to his expectations so far, he has still been superb. His statistics are down, but that is simply due to a decrease in minutes. Indiana has had so many blowout wins that he hasn’t had to play big minutes. So, although his statistics may appear to have dropped, a look at his per 40 minutes statistics tell the real story. His scoring has gone up from 22 to 24 points per 40 minutes. Zeller’s rebounds have also gone up, from 9 to 12 rebounds per 40 minutes. Will Sheehey, Christian Watford, Victor Oladipo and Jordan Hulls are all also scoring in large quantities. All four players are averaging over 11 ppg, giving Indiana some of the best depth in the country.
Their undefeated run has ended, but as they approach conference play, all of Indiana’s goals are more than attainable. They will go in to Big Ten play as co-favorites with Michigan. It will be a tough test for Indiana, as the Big Ten is as deep as ever. There will not be any easy nights, as Indiana has had so far all year. Indiana has what it takes to win a Big Ten title and even a national title, and that tough journey will really start up soon when conference play starts.
