Towson Tigers End Four-Game Losing Streak, Gain Momentum in Victory Over Oregon State

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

In a surprising turn of events, the Towson Tigers were the only Colonial Athletic Association basketball program to secure a victory on Saturday. Of all of the seven teams that were in action, it seemed unlikely that Towson would be the only CAA club to secure a victory, let alone against a Pac-12 opponent on the road.

But that’s exactly what they did.

The addition of Jerrelle Benimon to this Tigers club has completely changed the culture of the Towson men’s basketball team. And, Coach Pat Skerry has definitely reaped the benefits. For the season, Benimon is averaging 16.2 points and 11.6 rebounds per game. He also has shown a tendency to really perform in big games.

He did just that against Oregon State when he led the Tigers with 20 points, 21 rebounds 2 assists and 1 block. The performance was Benimon’s 8th double double of the season in 13 games.

But, despite Benimon’s ridiculous stat line, Marcus Damas was the hero for the Tigers. The sophomore guard hit an 18-footer with 0.8 seconds left in the game to sink the now 9-3 Beavers. Damas added 16 points of his own.

The win ended a four-game losing streak for Towson and has given the Tigers plenty of momentum entering their CAA play season debut against UNCW on Wednesday.
