UNCW Seahawks Lack Supporting Cast Around Keith Rendleman in Loss to Campbell

The UNCW Seahawks lost a very winnable contest against the Campbell Camels on Satrday, 72-60.

The Seahawks controlled the first half, at one point leading 22-14, but went cold  in the second half. UNCW shot just 9 for 27 as a team after the intermission, and just 1 of 8 from beyond the three-point line. UNCW shot just 38.2 percent for the entire contest.

When the Hawks lose, its usually because Keith Rendleman’s supporting cast doesn’t compliment him enough. In this contest, the standout senior scored 18 points to go a long with his 11 rebounds, but Craig Ponder was the only other player from Wilmington that was able score in double digits.

The Seahawks also struggled defending opposing guards. For Campbell, Darren White and Trey Freeman combined for 50 points, 8 assists and 14 rebounds.

While this loss was unfortunate for head coach Buzz Peterson and company, it did expose the team’s two biggest flaws: supporting role players and defending the perimeter.

With Colonial Athletic Association play beginning this week, those are both areas of the game the team will have to improve on sooner rather than later.
