In a big game for the Dayton Flyers before they start conference play on January 9th, they took on the USC Trojans on Sunday night. USC has not been playing well this season and has been predicted by many hoops experts as a sleeper team in the Pac 12.
The Flyers fell to the Trojans 63-61 in overtime. Dayton did not shoot the ball well on Sunday night vs. USC. From the field, the Flyers shot 34.5 percent and then from the three point line it was ten times worse at 14.3 percent. A bright spot from their shooting woes is that they got to the free throw line 29 times and converted 21 free throws.
A player from the Flyers that stood out was junior forward Devin Oliver, who on the season is averaging 9.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. In Sunday night’s game vs. USC, Oliver scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. He is the only player on Dayton’s roster that played semi good. Everybody else had a terrible shooting night.
For Dayton, I would consider this a bad loss right now on their tournament resume because USC is not playing well. If you are a Flyers fan you can only hope that USC can turn it around so that this loss can become a good loss. You do not want games in December to come back and haunt you in March.
With this loss, Dayton’s record is now 9-4 as they have one more non-conference game on January 5th vs. UAB before taking on VCU on January 9th to start off Atlantic 10 conference play.
