Miami (FL) Might Just be Alright Without Reggie Johnson

Last week, Reggie Johnson suffered an injury that will sideline him till about mid-February.  At the time, it seemed like a devastating loss for the Miami Hurricanes.

Yesterday, Miami opened up ACC play against a good Georgia Tech team and the Hurricanes had a convincing 13 point road win without their star big man.

Rion Brown came off the bench for Miami and picked up for some of the scoring that Johnson would usually account for.  He scored 22 points on 9-11 from the field and if the Hurricanes are going to keep up their success without their best player, they are going to need continued production off the bench.

Forward Kenny Kadji grabbed 14 rebounds as he didn’t seem to mind rebounding with more effectiveness because of the loss of double-digit rebounder, Johnson.

Miami also played great defense, only allowing 49 points for the whole game.  The Hurricanes are going to need to continue that type of defensive success if they want to make a run in the ACC.

Johnson is a force down low on defense and can stop almost any big man because of his size.  Yesterday, the Yellow Jackets were only able to score 16 points in the paint despite not having to score on Johnson.

This is a great sign for the Hurricanes.  If they can defend the paint and grab rebounds without Johnson and continue to win until he returns, they will be in great shape for post season play.

Miami has to have gained a lot of confidence from yesterday’s win and now realizes that they can compete even without their best big man.
