North Carolina Tar Heels Continue to Struggle in Loss to Miami
They let their opportunity slip away and got beat at home by a Miami team playing without one of their best players and post presence, Reggie Johnson.
Reggie Bullock and James Michael McAdoo have been the top two players on the team the whole year and in the most important game of the season to this point, they didn’t perform at all.
Bullock had 11 point, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 turnovers. He shot 4-16 from the field including 3-8 from the 3-point line. You can not shoot 25% from the field in a game where your team needs you to perform. After calling a players only meeting this week and being a leader, Bullock was certainly not a leader on the court today.
McAdoo is supposed to be this teams best player and be a top college basketball player. Today he was 5-14 from the field from 14 points. Shooting that poorly as a big man is very difficult to do, but you do have to credit the Miami defense. They recorded 8 blocked shots and made it very difficult for the Tar Heels to score down low.
Carolina could not make key baskets down the stretch in large part because of the performance of their two best players. P.J. Hairston did not help much either only going 2-7 from the field. A big reason Carolina lost was because of their offensive struggles late in the game.
Defensively, Carolina played pretty well until they really needed to get stops. That is when they broke down and allowed a couple of wide open uncontested 3′s with no close outs or help in a 1 point game. This allowed Miami to go up 9 points with less than 3 minutes left and really sealed the deal.
With defensive lapses and a lack of offense late in the game, you are going to have trouble beating any team and UNC is learning that the hard way.
Carolina heads in to Florida State, where they lost by 33 points last year, on Saturday. A much needed victory, but it definitely won’t come easy as Florida State is playing their best basketball of the year right now.
