Have the Defending ACC Champs Turned the Corner?

Paul Abell-US Presswire

Not many college basketball fans remember that the Florida State Seminoles are the reigning ACC Champions in basketball.  After a number of late game heroics by Michael Snaer last season, Florida State was able to march its way to an ACC championship behind a very versatile ball club put together by head coach Leonard Hamilton, and his top assistant Stan Jones.

However, just as it appeared that Florida State was preparing to turn the corner as a basketball program (at a football school), the ‘Noles found themselves in a bit of a bind. After beginning the season 6-1 against primarily inferior basketball clubs, FSU found themselves on a three-game losing streak which included a huge loss to in-state rival Florida. Questions began to swirl as to the mental makeup of this team.

Had coach Hamilton lost it? Was the team just too young to compete?

After missing one of their top scorers and leaders in Ian Miller for several games due to injury, Florida State is now back to a relative state of health and began 2-0 in ACC play for the first time in school history. With road wins against Clemson and Maryland, you have to wonder whether Florida State has found their rhythm and will begin to make themselves a factor in the ACC race. This year’s Florida State team is very versatile, albeit inexperienced.

If they can win some key games for the remainder of January, they could make a late push towards the NCAA tournament and be a dangerous match up for a higher-seeded opponent.
