What’s Gone Wrong for the North Carolina Tar Heels?

Brendan Maloney-USA TODAY Sports

For anyone into college basketball, the North Carolina Tar Heels have been among the most winningest programs and is arguably the most recognizable brand in the sport. North Carolina fans can be found in every pocket of the country, and their rivalry with Duke headlines the sport.

North Carolina head coach Roy Williams is one of the greatest of all time. When he arrives in a prospects’ living room, he usually isn’t told no. He has access to some of the best players in the entire country and it begs the question, what has gone wrong for North Carolina so far this season?

Amidst all of the obvious talent on a North Carolina roster that’s filled with blue chip recruits, there are things that appear to be missing for a program that seemingly has everything stacked in their favor and that missing thing is W’s. So far this season, North Carolina has some losses that do not appear to be commensurate with their talent. Being blown off the court by Indiana, losing to Butler, and losing the first two ACC games of the season does not look good.

The schedule doesn’t get any easier for the Tar Heels, as many teams are starting to see the vulnerabilities of UNC’s ball club. I can imagine the mad scramble among ACC coaches to study the game film of UNC’s losses in order to ascertain the game plan to deflate the Heels. UNC must counter and show maturity, teamwork, and mental toughness.

If they can keep their heads, Roy Williams should be able to salvage the season. If they lose a couple more games, it’s possible that this season will become a nightmare in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels did however, pick up a much needed victory at Florida State on Saturday afternoon.
