The lack of help from 7-foot center Dennis Clifford is just one reason why Boston College will struggle in their remaining 15 games. They will be lucky to win even five of those contests.
Clifford, a sophomore, is just averaging 5.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game. He was expected to have an impact this season for head coach Steve Donahue and the Eagles, but he is only playing 20 out of 40 minutes each game. His field goal percentage is solid at 56.5%, but he isn’t forcing the issue with large amounts of shot attempts.
Freshmen guards Oliver Hanlan and Joe Rahon have offered a welcomed surprise each scoring in double digits and recording more that one steal per game. However, Rahon hasn’t been consistent in each contest. Hanlan has been great scoring double figures in each of the Eagles’ last eight games.
Ryan Anderson struggled early this season due to injury troubles, but recently he has played up to his potential. On the season he is averaging 16.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, and is shooting over 50% from the field.
The performances of Hanlon, Rahon, and Anderson should have B.C. fans optimistic for the time being, but the Eagles will struggle to come away with wins throughout ACC play.
The only way they can compete from here on out is if the core three youngsters all contribute together every game. With the scoring/play-making ability of Hanlon and Anderspn, plus the facilitating and play-making ability of Rahon, there could be some really tight games for B.C. Without a true presence in the post to assist Anderson on both ends of the court, the Eagles won’t be able gut out many victories however.
Close games, yes, but wins for Boston College, not likely from now through their regular season finale on March 9.
