36 Points is All Wyoming Can Muster, As Cowboys Fall at Fresno State

The numbers don’t lie.

Not many college basketball teams are going to score 36 points in 40 minutes of action and come away with a victory. With that being said, not many teams are going to shoot 24% in a contest and be victorious either.

So, when all was said and done on Wednesday night, Fresno State was undoubtedly able to hand Wyoming their second loss of the season.

The Cowboys were 12-of-50 from the field on Wednesday and shot just 18.5% (5-of-27) from beyond the arc. Riley Grabau (10 points) and Larry Nance Jr. (10 points) combined for 20 of the team’s 36 points in the loss. The numbers for Wyoming are atrocious, but the bigger story may be the loss of Luke Martinez. Or, maybe it’s even the fact that fans who were on the Cowboys’ bandwagon may have jumped a bit too early.

After beginning the season at 13-0 and becoming one of the nation’s final four undefeated squads this season, Wyoming has now dropped two of their past three contests and this all comes on the heel of the suspension and arrest of Martinez, who was the team’s leading scorer on the year.

You can credit Fresno State for their defensive efforts on Wednesday, but the story here is all about the Cowboys’ recent struggles. If Wyoming hopes to break this recent slump and still dance once March rolls around they are going to need to figure things out sooner, rather than later.

Others will need to step up in Martinez’s absence and do it fast because there are no breaks in the Mountain West Conference this year.
