Texas A&M Will Need Another Heroic Effort from Elston Turner To Upset Florida Gators
In one of the lesser but underrated matchups today, The No. 10 Florida Gators travel to College Station to take on the young Texas A&M Aggies in SEC play. The Gators are banged up and while they’re getting Mike Rosario back, they have several other key contributors dealing with injuries. It’s very possible the Gators could lose this game, but they are without a doubt the best team in the SEC when when healthy.
In fact, they’re the only team ranked in the top 10, and Missouri is the only other team ranked in the top 25 from the SEC.
The Aggies played well in an 83-71 win over the struggling Kentucky Wildcats, getting a heroic effort from senior guard Elston Turner. Turner is the third-leading scorer in the SEC, and the Aggies need him to step up against the league’s top scoring defense (in both ppg and shooting percentage allowed).
He dropped 40 against Kentucky, easily a career high, but will have his hands full with one of the top defenders in the country in Scottie Wilbekin. The only way the Aggies have a prayer in this game is if they keep it a low-scoring contest, and Turner keeps the Aggies in it with his long range shooting. Turner is shooting 44 percent from long distance this season.
Texas A&M is a young team and has their first big test this season. It will be interesting to see how they respond. The last time these two teams met, Florida wiped the floor with the Aggies by 20 on a neutral floor.
Turner will need help from big men Ray Turner and Kourtney Roberson. Roberson is averaging a double-double in SEC play so far, and the two will need to contain Florida big men Pat Young and Erik Murphy, who are both averaging more than 10 ppg.
This could be a very exciting game, and the Aggies have a chance to get a statement win after a few questionable losses in non-conference play this year.
