Well, a win over Georgia Tech this past Thursday kept the Blue Devils in the hunt amongst the nation’s elite, while No. 2 Indiana and No. 1 Louisville both fell. Sure, by default, Duke – who was positioned at No. 3 this past week – will likely take over the top spot when the new rankings are released on Monday afternoon, but it’s a deserving title, no doubt.
Even with the Blue Devils loss to N.C. State a week and a half ago, some believed the Blue Devils would even retain that top spot. Michigan on the other hand, secured a crucial, road victory at Minnesota just this past week, so their case at the nation’s No. 1 overall ranking has an argument in its own right.
However, the Blue Devils, who continue to move forward with their season as senior forward Ryan Kelly recovers from a nagging foot injury, are the team that should sit atop college basketball for the time being.
With upsets galore and conference play kicking into full force however, the rankings fluctuate on a weekly basis. In fact, Duke will make a trip to Miami (FL) on Wednesday in a game that could mark the culmination for the Hurricanes’ season. At 4-0 within the conference, Miami is looking for separation between themselves and the other conference contenders and what more could they ask for than potentially having the nation’s No. 1 team in town.
Although we will wait for another great week of college basketball to play it out, it seems obvious that stability amongst the nation’s elite will continue to change out throughout the next six or seven weeks.
For now however, Duke deserves to be this week’s No. 1-ranked squad.
