Villanova’s Resume Certainly Got a Whole Lot Better This Week
When you’re 11-7 overall and 2-3 within the Big East Conference, the window of opportunity is usually closing fast.
At the same time, when you enter the week having dropped three consecutive games, there isn’t much to lose, especially with a pair of top-five ranked opponents entering your home court.
Well, despite the uncertainty surrounding the expectations at Villanova this season, the Wildcats made not one, but two important statements this week, sending a direct message to the top of the conference. On Wednesday, the Wildcats got the best of No. 5 Louisville, rushing the court in celebratory fashion.
Well, when push came to shove, Villanova wasn’t done or satisfied with just one top-five victory, so on Saturday, they decided to add another one to their resume. In a tight-knit ball game that needed overtime to decide a winner, the Wildcats stunned third-ranked Syracuse to advance to 13-7 overall and 4-3 within the conference.
Freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono buried the game-tying three with under three seconds to play to force overtime, as the Wildcats got some separation in the extra frame for the 75-71 victory.
Now, before we rush to judgement off the mere fact that Villanova has had one incredible week, the Wildcats will still have plenty of work to do in terms of making a case for their postseason potential. However, let’s be serious, they got a chance to make a push and now two top five victories on their resume.
The key for Villanova moving forward will be to limit losses and with seven already, the Wildcats are facing a lot of must-win pressure. Another thing that they will need is a true statement win on the road. Well, they’ll have that opportunity on Wednesday when they make a trip to Notre Dame.
