There was no fault in Creighton‘s road loss to Wichita State back on Jan. 19, but a surprising defeat at the hands of Drake just days later certainly came as a bit of a shock.

Well, a Sunday trip to Southern Illinois wrapped up a three-game road stand for the Blue Jays in a game that they desperately needed to secure. Led by All-American candidate Doug McDermott, the Blue Jays got back on track, routing the Salukis by a final score of 81-51. Creighton shot 63.0% from the field in the victory.

McDermott continues to be the focal point for Creighton and his 21-point, ten rebound performance on Sunday night was a testament to that. The Blue Jays had entered the week ranked 17th in the nation, but following the loss to Drake, that positioning is likely to decrease yet again.

With January coming to a close, the Blue Jays’ ability to get back on track was simply what they had been waiting and hoping for. Another opportunity to grab a victory after the shocking loss to Drake was just what they needed. With Sunday’s win now in the books, they can continue to progress forward.

At 18-3 overall and 7-2 within the Missouri Valley Conference, Creighton is a full game behind the Shockers in the conference standings. This week presents equal opportunity for the Blue Jays to keep the pressure on Wichita State as a pair of home games against both Bradley and Missouri State are games that Creighton should win.

There isn’t much doubt that the Blue Jays will dance come March, so even despite the back-to-back losses prior to Sunday, Creighton had no real reason to panic.

Creighton and Missouri State will tip-off at 8:00pm (EST) on Wednesday.
