Is Wichita State the best team in the Missouri Valley Conference? Well, according to the records that would be the case. They have already beaten Creighton this year, and most people think the Blue Jays are the best team.
Coming into the season a lot of people had picked Creighton as the overwhelming favorite to win the conference. That was the obvious choice as they returned the majority of their NCAA tournament team along with All-American Doug McDermott. I believe that the Shockers might be the favorite as of right now and I will tell you why.
I believe Wichita State has the advantage right now because of their balanced scoring and the way they lock people down on defense. They are allowing 58 points a game while scoring 70. They have four guys who average eight or more points a game and they all take turns leading the team.
With the return of Carl Hall who missed seven games with a broken right thumb, they will have his added size in the paint and his scoring also. I feel that they don’t have one guy that scores all the points and they know how to play if one of them gets injured or in foul trouble. The only thing that could hurt them as they go into post season play or even in late games this year is that they aren’t very strong with taking care of the ball. Right now their turnover to assist ratio is right around 1:1.
If they can sure up that part of their game I think they can overtake Creighton as conference champs this year.
