UMass Minutemen Force Richmond Spiders Into Bad Shots In Win On Sunday

Geoff Burke – US Presswire

The Massachusetts Minutemen were bigger, faster and stronger than the Richmond Spiders on Sunday, but UMass got a 70-65 win at home.

The Minutemen shot just 3-of-15 from 3-point range but that was about all UMass did wrong.

Chaz Williams had 18 points on a day when the Minutemen shot better than 50-percent in each half. The free-throw line was kind to UMass, who were led by a combined 11 points on 13 attempts from Williams and center Sampson Carter.

Maxie Esho held it down in the paint for the Minutemen with nine boards and the sophomore showed impressive patience in sticking to post defense instead of his bizarre tendency to wander out to the wing to set up for an outside shot.

Esho finished the game with just four points but even without him being a scoring threat under the basket, the Minutemen outscored Richmond 38-20 in the paint.

Forget the paint, the Spiders couldn’t get anything going on offense towards the end of the game, putting up just two points in the final six minutes of the game. Deion Taylor didn’t help things for the Spiders by committing a pair of fouls in the first four minutes of the game and going to the bench for the rest of the half as a result.

Kendall Anthony suffered the same fate three minutes later but at least he had five points by the time he was banished to the bench.

Wayne Sparrow picked up the slack in the first half in a big way, hitting all three of his attempts from deep, en route to 14 points by halftime. Inexplicably, though, Sparrow saw no more than four minutes of playing time in the second half. Instead, Darien Brothers went 1 0f 9 from the field, including a single 3-pointer on seven attempts.

Anthony was also 1 of 8 but didn’t connect on any of his four 3-ball attempts and fouled out in eight minutes of court time.

The Minutemen next play on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. road game against the La Salle Explorers. The Spiders next face the Temple Owls in a 7 p.m. road game on Wednesday as well.
