Doug McDermott Leads Creighton Bluejays To Another Win

At this point in the college basketball season, there are very few things that seem like a given. However, one of those givens right now appears to be the Creighton Bluejays winning in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Creighton moved to 8-2 in conference play and 19-3 overall with a 91-77 win over the Missouri State Bears on Wednesday. Another given is Doug McDermott having a huge night, which he did once again with 29 points and ten rebounds.

McDermott helped Creighton get to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and it is going to be up to him if the Blue Jays want to do that again this year. He is the heart and soul of the Creighton team and without him, the team is really nothing. He has that combination of size and skill that reminds me some of Christian Laettner. Sure, McDermott probably won’t find himself having a career at the next level, but he is dominating conference play right now.

Creighton will have one big test left on their regular season schedule when they face the Wichita State Shockers, who beat Creighton two weeks ago during the last game of the season. If Creighton can come out and get the victory in that game, it could allow the Bluejays to build some momentum for another tournament run.

It all boils down to McDermott, though, at that point and whether or not he can make sure that Creighton moves down into the tournament. The Bluejays are a potential Sweet 16 team, but all their hopes of that run fall on McDermott’s broad shoulders.
