The St. John’s Red Storm are currently riding a five game winning streak. Well, that was until their match-up against the Georgetown Hoyas today. As of my writing, the Johnnies are currently down 11 with a little over 9 minutes of action left in the game. However, regardless of the outcome, the biggest story coming out of this game is surely to be the loss of Jamal Branch.
Branch went out early in the second half with an apparent knee sprain. No further updates have been released by the team, but the injury as it happened looked far worse than just a sprain.
For those of you who are unaware of Branch’s abilities, he’s been the calming force in the Red Storm offense and a key catalyst in their five game winning streak. If Branch were to miss a substantial amount of time you could essentially put a tombstone on whatever hopes St. John’s had for dancing in March. D’Angelo Harrison will especially miss him, as teams tend to focus on him entirely, and without Branch in the lineup, Harrison is expected to have even less good looks at the basket.
Hopefully for the Red Storm the injury is just a sprain. With only seven games left after today, St. John’s cannot afford to lose any ground in the Big East Conference. With most teams packed between third and ninth place, any time missed(with games inevitably lost because of his absence) would be a crushing blow to any postseason chances.
