Akron Zips Rolling Through MAC Play, Boast the Nation’s Longest Current Win Streak
The name Keith Dambrot might not be held under the radar for much longer.
The head coach of the Akron Zips has his squad on a roll and fresh off their biggest MAC victory of the season. Over the weekend, the Zips defeated the Ohio Bobcats, strengthening their lead within the conference even more.
In addition to the 8-0 conference start, the Zips currently boast the nation’s longest winning streak, which was extended to 13 in the victory over the Bobcats. At 17-4 overall, Akron appears to be destined for the NCAA Tournament, but in terms of their overall resume and the effect that it may have on a potential at-large bid, the Zips certainly still have some work to do.
The Zips have not lost since Dec. 15, a game that they dropped on the road at Detroit. That 13-game winning streak may finally be garnering the attention that it deserves as Akron’s hype continues to grow. Anchored by 7-foot center Zeke Marshall, a balanced attack that also includes the superb production of both Demetrius Treadwell and Alex Abreu has helped the Zips continue their winning ways.
With a game-and-a-half edge within the conference standings, Akron needs to remain focused on winning the games that they should. Sure, it’s easy to speculate or discuss just when the Zips will fall, but it’s best to just let things play out. At the moment, it doesn’t appear anyone in the MAC can get in their way, but a return trip to Ohio later in the season marks just one of their remaining obstacles.
Akron will look to keep things rolling against Central Michigan on Tuesday.
