It probably comes as no surprise following another productive week, but the Miami (FL) Hurricanes have burst into the top ten within the AP Poll (Feb. 4) this week. This marks the program’s first such accomplishment since 1999.
A last second (literally) tip-in by Miami forward Reggie Johnson stunned North Carolina State on Saturday afternoon, as the Hurricanes picked up their ninth win in a row overall. At 8-0 within the conference, the Hurricanes are certainly moving towards being the favorites for a regular season crown as the month of February kicks into full gear.
On the year, the Hurricanes are now 3-1 against ranked opponents and as the No. 8 ranked team in the country this week, the pressure to protect their ranking and conference lead is at the forefront. The great news in terms of looking ahead for the Hurricanes is the fact that they now return home this week for another pair of winnable games.
Miami (FL) will certainly be favored throughout the week as the chance to get to 10-0 within the ACC is expected. Durand Scott and Kenny Kadji continue to pace the Hurricanes offensively, while the play of Johnson, Shane Larkin, and Julian Gamble has also been superb.
The outlook into Miami’s success however, is a testament to the work and production that head coach Jim Larranaga has put in with this program in just a short amount of time. In just his second season at the helm, Larranaga has taken the Hurricanes from a potential NCAA Tournament team to one that could be barking alongside one of the top seeds within the bracket.
Tip-off between Miami (FL) and Boston College is scheduled for 7:00pm (EST) on Tuesday.
