The frustrating season for Syracuse fans continued with a dominating effort as the Orange beat Notre Dame 63-47 at home on Monday night. It was a quick turn around for a team that lost a low scoring affair at Pittsburgh on Saturday. CJ Fair continued his hot play pouring in 18 points while adding 10 rebounds and three steals
Jerami Grant added 14 points in arguably his best performance of the season. Grant filled the stat sheet adding six rebounds, two assists and an emphatic block of Jack Cooley in the second half. The extra time that Grant has gotten has been one of the few positives from James Southerland’s absence. The long range bomber will apparently have his hearing on Friday so Syracuse may get him back soon if things turn out well.
They held the Irish to 35% shooting from the field and 30% from the three-point line on Monday. Cooley had only 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Orange collapsed inside on the big man. They also covered a lot of ground and managed to out-rebound the Irish 29-21.
The most important development that came out of this game was the offensive “explosion” by Rakeem Christmas who scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Christmas added three offensive rebounds and four blocked shots as he was a lot more active. Combine that with the 12 combined points from Brandon Triche and Michael Carter-Williams and you have a team that gives opponents a lot to worry about. Of course, it also gives fans a lot to worry about when they don’t know where the points are coming from. Carter-Williams was able to distribute the ball with eight assists and just one turnover. He doesn’t need to score to make an impact on the game.
