Who Wants To Be No. 1? Anyone?
For the fifth straight week college basketball‘s top-ranked team has been upset so forgive the Florida Gators if they would like to pass on being ranked No. 1 when the new polls are released on Monday.
IU led the game by 10 with less than five minutes to play, but were stunned with a last-second layup to fall for only the third time this season.
The Blue Devils fell on the road to N.C. State 84-76 Jan. 12. It was the Wolfpacks’ first win over a No. 1 ranked team since 2003.
A week later, the Cardinals lost at home to Syracuse, 70-68.
Duke returned to No. 1, but quickly were ousted by Miami (Fla.), getting humiliated 90-63. It was the largest loss by a top-ranked team since 1968.
Michigan then inherited the No. 1 ranking and followed the trend of a very short stay on top thanks to its 81-73 loss Feb. 2 at Indiana.
Who will be next? The overwhelming favorite to take over the No. 1 spot will be Florida, assuming the second-ranked Gators get by hapless Mississippi State at home on Saturday.
Do you think Florida wants the honor of being the No. 1-ranked team? No way.
And uh-oh the Gators have a date with red-hot Kentucky on Tuesday. Could we be looking at the No. 1 team being toppled six straight weeks? Absolutely.
That game is in Gainesville, but John Calipari’s young ‘Cats seem to be hitting their stride having won four in a row and six of their last seven.
Who said the regular season doesn’t matter in college hoops?
And looking ahead to the NCAA Tournament with parity being at an all time high, March Madness should be truly maddening. I can’t hardly wait. What about you?
