Why Duke Should be the Next No. 1 Team

No. 1 teams have been going down on a weekly basis in college basketball over the past few weeks. The No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers did not break the trend, losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini already this week. With that said, there will likely be a new No. 1 team in college basketball next week and it should be the Duke Blue Devils.

Like I have been saying all year, Duke has the best non-conference schedule resume in the nation. The Blue Devils have beaten three teams from last year’s Final Four. Not to mention, Ohio State, Kentucky and Louisville were all ranked in the top five when Duke faced off against them.

The Blue Devils also beat Minnesota, VCU and Temple in their out-of-conference schedule. Show me a better non-conference schedule resume and then we will talk.

Duke is currently No. 4 in the nation, with an overall record of 20-2 and an ACC record of 7-2. As you can see, both of Duke’s losses came in conference play, which came on the road to two very good teams in the North Carolina State Wolfpack and Miami Hurricanes. However, the Blue Devils just got revenge over the Wolfpack, beating them last night at home.

Duke’s resume is one thing, but its players is a whole different ballgame. Mason Plumlee and Seth Curry arguably make up the best two player combo in the nation. These two studs are averaging a combined 34.9 points per game. They are also Wooden Award Finalists. No big deal.

The Blue Devils also have three other players scoring in double-digits this season and when Ryan Kelly is on the team, it is nearly impossible to stop.

Duke has already gotten a shot at No. 1 this year, but so has No. 3 Michigan. No. 2 Florida went down earlier in the week as well. All three of these teams could make a great case for being the top team in the rankings next week, but none of those teams have as good of a resume as the Blue Devils.
