Will North Carolina Make the 2013 NCAA Tournament?

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Most people knew that the North Carolina Tar Heels would not be as good as they were last season, since their starting lineup pretty much all went pro. However, did anyone expect it to be this bad for the Tar Heels, which brings up the bigger question: Will North Carolina make the 2013 NCAA tournament?

Well, like usual, the Tar Heels are one of the highest scoring offenses in the nation being the 11th ranked team in that department, so I guess that is always a plus. However, UNC is 16-7 on the year with a 6-4 record in the ACC. So right now, the Tar Heels are most likely in because this conference will get at least four teams in the big dance and the Tar Heels are currently the fourth team in the ACC standings.

This team had a relatively tough non-conference schedule, playing Butler, Indiana, Texas and UNLV. The only bad part is North Carolina was only able to beat UNLV out of those four teams.

In conference play, the Tar Heels have beaten Maryland and Florida State, and have lost to Virginia, Miami (twice) and North Carolina State. Those are just the highlights if you will. So really this team does not have any bad losses on the resume, but it also doesn’t have a huge victory.

If this was any other ACC team then the Tar Heels would definitely be on the bubble, but it obviously is not. Right now this team is in the dance, but it could certainly play its way out. However, a win against Duke would be a huge bonus and the Tar Heels will have two tries at that, since these two teams will play each other two more times in the regular season.
