Bubble Watch: Winning Is Only Way Out for Villanova Wildcats
The Villanova Wildcats have had a wild and strange season. Currently rocking a 15-10 record, Nova has had a slew of bad losses but even more impressive wins. Inconsistency has put them in a situation where they are likely on the wrong side of the bubble, assuming they are even on it.
But all hope is not lost for the Wildcats. Thanks to key victories over then-top-five teams in the nation, head coach Jay Wright and Villanova still have an outside chance to go dancing in March.
Take the Big East Tournament and put it to the side for a second. I doubt Wright wants to rely heavily on a conference tournament run to get into the NCAA Tournament. Nor would he want to be in a situation where he has to win it to get his team a pair of slippers. Luckily for him, they might not have to.
The remaining schedule for Nova is filled with RPI boosters, strength of schedule helpers, almost everything you would want to help improve your resume before showing it to the NCAA Committee. Six games are left for the Wildcats, four of which are against teams likely to get at-large births for the Tourney. Assuming, which is not recommended in this season, that the Wildcats take care of the two “lesser” opponents, all Wright needs is his team to win four more games.
While that sounds easy, it is not. The reason those four games would help them get an at-large birth is that they are very good teams. In fact, the Wildcats have only played one of the four (Pittsburgh Panthers) and lost. There is really no way to gauge the probability of them coming out of that stretch with a string of victories, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
What I am trying to say is, Villanova has a chance. Even if it is only a puncher’s chance, it is a chance.
At this point in this crazy season, that’s all they can really ask for considering Nova lost to the powerhouse that is the Columbia Lions earlier this year.
