Georgetown Hoyas Gain Control of the Big East Conference

The Georgetown Hoyas have rallied off seven wins in a row and now sit atop the Big East Conference. The Hoyas(19-4, 9-3 in Big East play) are in sole possession of first place after Otto Porter Jr. helped lead them past an offensively challenged Cincinnati Bearcats last night. Porter scored 16 points and helped Georgetown overcome wasting a 12 point lead in the second half.

But that’s not really the story. In the last year that the Big East is going to be relevant, before they become a complete abomination, the Hoyas are in position to take home the regular season championship. While there is still five teams less than a game back, it does give Georgetown the ability to control their own destiny the rest of the way.

Up next for John Thompson III and the Hoyas are the only thing worse than what the Big East is going to become, your beloved DePaul Blue Demons. The Blue Demons are all kinds of awful, riding a nine game losing streak, and are about to give the Hoyas a nice little confidence builder on the 20th. So while the rest of the conference battles each other to try to catch up to Georgetown, the Hoyas will be busy curb-stomping DePaul.

It will be interesting to see how they react as the conference’s top dog. Georgetown has always been an under-the-radar type of team, but now being in a position to win the league, comes more pressure and press. However, I don’t think there is anything that could slow them down anytime soon. Time will tell if Thompson’s slow, methodical offense will have success in this year’s NCAA Tournament.
