Ryan Arcidiacono Helps Keep Villanova’s Tournament Hopes Alive in Road Win at UConn
On the road, the Villanova Wildcats were facing a must-win situation on Saturday in Hartford, Connecticut.
Led by a 25-point performance from freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono, the Wildcats used a 12-point second half advantage to knock off UConn and keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
The Wildcats’ resume is not overly impressive, but a pair of top five upsets highlights their case for a postseason berth. Villanova is in a position where dancing as an at-large squad is certainly a possibility. The victory on Saturday moved the Wildcats to 16-10 overall and while the win helps keep them in the driver’s seat moving forward, Villanova still has plenty of work to do.
Arcidiacono finished the game with an 8-of-15 afternoon from the field, converting on five three-pointers, as well. His leadership and shot making ability has been crucial for the Wildcats and head coach Jay Wright this season. Just a freshman, Arcidiacono has done some growing up at times and Saturday was just another example of that and his overall potential in a Villanova uniform even down the line.
The win for the ‘Cats marks their third win over the past four games. At 7-6 within the Big East Conference, Villanova is approaching a week in which back-to-back home games are once again must-wins. In their final five regular season contests of the season, the Wildcats face three teams that are ranked within the AP Top 25 this week. So basically, if Villanova is going to dance, they virtually control their own destiny down the stretch here.
Villanova will play host to Rutgers on Monday night.
