IU's Oladipo Leads Hoosiers, Liberty/Longwood Race to Finish, Kansas/OK State Clash Tonight
Yesterday saw the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers win at No. 4 Michigan State for the first time since 1991 and end the game on a 9-1 to take over sole-possession of the Big Ten thanks to Victor Oladipo being Victor Oladipo. There was a Big South game where the two teams combined to score 55 points over the final 3 minutes and 55 seconds as Longwood survived Liberty's late charge. The game also featured a career-high 40 points and season-high 12 rebounds for a Longwood junior. Tonight's marquee matchup pits No. 9 Kansas and No. 14 Oklahoma State in a critical Big 12 battle.
Player of the Day - Victor Oladipo, Indiana
Oladipo led the No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers to a comeback win at No. 4 Michigan State, 72-68, giving IU sole possession of first-place in the Big Ten. The junior helped secure the win after his fast-break dunk put the Hoosiers up three with 10 seconds left. His two free throws with two ticks left capped a 9-1 run to close the game for Indiana, which improved to 12-2 in league play while the Spartans fell to 11-3. He finished with 19 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
Game of the Day - Longwood 102, Liberty 101
These two Big South foes combined for 55 points following the last media timeout at the 3:55 mark of the second half. Last time they met, Longwood got beat 74-47--last night, they had 47 points by halftime. Four straight made three-pointers helped Liberty creep back in it late, but their rally ultimately fell short. Longwood outscored Liberty 31-15 from the free throw line as both teams got there regularly—50 fouls were called in the game.
Stat Stuffing of the Day - 40 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist
Where would head coach Mike Gillian’s Longwood Lancers be without Tristan Carey? Carey had himself quite a night in their win over Liberty, tallying a career-high in points while connecting on 8-15 (53.3%) of his three-point attempts. His 12 rebounds were a season-high and he also was 8-10 from the free throw line. He totaled 17 points in the second stanza to help Longwood hold on and avenge an earlier loss to the Flames. He is the 14th player to score at least 40 points in a game this season and the fifth in February.
Game of the Day (Feb. 20) - No. 9 Kansas at No. 14 Oklahoma State
With both teams tied for second-place in the Big 12, Stillwater is the site for today’s game of the day. Last time they met, an unranked Cowboys squad went into Allen Fieldhouse and beat the Jayhawks on February 2nd, 85-80. Kansas has rebounded quite nicely following a three-game losing streak, winning their last two games, including a blowout 21-point win over in-state rival and conference leader Kansas State. K-State leads the Big 12 by just half a game over KU and OSU. Best believe the Gallagher-Iba Arena will be rocking tonight.
