However, a tough and gritty battle at Gallagher-Iba Arena brought tons of excitement and a number of ties and lead changes. The Jayhawks eventually held off the Cowboys in double-overtime when Kansas point guard Naadir Tharpe hit the game-winning shot in the final seconds.
Ironically enough, Tharpe’s game-winning runner was the only field goal that the Jayhawks converted upon in both overtimes combined. That’s astonishing considering the length of the game, especially with the pair of overtime sessions.
While the play on the court spoke for itself, the off-the-court highlight came from the Oklahoma State student section. In the first overtime, the ESPN telecast zoomed in on one sign that was being held up in the crowd.
It simply read, “He’s a Man. He’s Forte.”
Of course, the Cowboys’ fans were referring to the infamous rant of head football coach, Mike Gundy, taking advantage of the play on words in comparison to freshman guard, Phil Forte.
Despite the tough loss, there was some humor to take away from the Cowboys’ loss and given the improvements of the team this season, Wednesday night is just a slight slip up at this point in the year. Kansas on the other hand, proved that once again the conference crown runs through Lawrence as they continue their pursuit of a ninth consecutive Big 12 crown.
Oklahoma State will look to bounce back this weekend against West Virginia, as the Cowboys look to now keep the pressure on the two frontrunners in the conference.
