Caution: Moby Madness is in the air.
Moby Madness, otherwise known as the Colorado State Rams fever, is sweeping Colorado’s front range. It’s highly contagious and can cause people to do crazy things inside, or even outside, of Moby Arena. Call it the hottest ticket in town.
All it takes is one game – one whiff of the popcorn, one sight of the thousands out to show their support, one hint of the raucous noise – for a person to be effected.
The epitome of Moby Madness could be seen Wednesday in a Craigslist ad stating, “Will Trade Husband for Two tickets to UNM – CSU – $1.” It went on to explain, “Or I will just buy them and take him with me. Thank you!” and has since been taken down by the user.
It seems people will do just about anything to secure a ticket to one of the three remaining Rams home games with Saturday’s game being the hottest ticket this town has ever seen.
Colorado State is currently enjoying one of their best seasons in school history; even after losing 61-59 to the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Wednesday night, No. 22 CSU sits at 21-5 overall, 8-3 in the marvelous Mountain West Conference.
This is the second consecutive week for the Rams being ranked, starting at 24 and moving up to 22, and this special season allowed supporters to see their green and gold crack the Top 25 for the first time since 1954.
In fact, this season – Larry Eustachy‘s first as head coach in Fort Collins – has seen multiple school records set or tied. The Rams won 13 non-conference games, and started 6-0, which tied the best start of a team with 1970-71 and 2005-06. Their 39-point blowout of the Air Force Academy Falcons on January 16 was the largest margin of victory over a conference foe.
Incredible is their third-best in the nation 27-game home winning streak, another school record, and a definite factor creating the demand for tickets as of late. November 19, 2011 was the last time CSU lost at home, ironically to Eustachy’s Southern Miss team, and everyone wants to be witness to this spectacular season of college basketball.
The demand is reaching levels of deliriousness; after public tickets to this Saturday’s game against No. 16 New Mexico Lobos sold out last week, the school decided to hand out student tickets early, leading a few fanatics to sleep outside the McGraw Center in the bitter cold. The 2,500 available student tickets were gone in less than three hours Wednesday morning, another school record.
Oh, the sellout? It’s the third straight for CSU, yet another first in school history.
Yes, Colorado State has pushed themselves into the national discussion as one of the best teams in college basketball, and they’re vying for the regular season MW title.
Saturday afternoon’s battle against New Mexico (22-4, 9-2) will go a long way in deciding the winner of the wild Mountain West – a victory for CSU would tie the teams up in both overall and conference records, creating a race to the finish line to end the year. The Rams would still need the Lobos to lose one more game than them to take the conference title, but a loss would basically end those hopes.
Everything will be on the line this Saturday afternoon – tipoff is set for 2 p.m. MT on NBC Sports Network – and it’s shaping up to be a great game.
No doubt the Moby Maniacs will be out in full force to give their Rams a homecourt advantage in the biggest college basketball game Fort Collins has seen in 60 years.
