Wake Forest Catches the Miami (FL) Hurricanes Napping, Ends Undefeated Streak
The upset loss will certainly result in attention grabbing headlines but as college basketball fans know, undefeated streaks are made to be broken.
The Hurricanes falling to the Demon Deacons could have been predicted as Miami (FL) was bound to lose eventually. Not only is going undefeated in conference action incredibly difficult to do, the Hurricanes had been struggling as of late, with the opposition bringing their best in a measuring stick contest against one of the nation’s top teams.
In Miami (FL)’s two previous outings, against the Florida State Seminoles and Clemson Tigers, they began to show signs of begin more human and less the juggernaut status they had earned over the weeks. Florida State hung around in the second half, while Clemson nearly pulled off the upset in a tough grind-it-out victory by the Hurricanes.
In both occasions, Miami (FL) showed flashes of hitting the snooze button, thinking after gaining a lead they’d easily roll out the win. In both occasions the Hurricanes managed to wake up in time to avoid the upset loss.
Unfortunately, Miami (FL) once again entered a contest flat, appearing as if Wake Forest wouldn’t be a significant challenge in their minds. By the time the Hurricanes decided to wake up, the Demon Deacons were firing on all cylinders, and unlike Miami (FL)’s two previous opponents, they weren’t going to let the chance of an upset slip away.
It’s hard to fault the Hurricanes for taking Wake Forest lightly in this contest, considering Miami (FL)’s 13-0 record in league play entering the game compared to the Demon Deacon’s 4-9 record. After dominating the competition in the conference, it’s easy for a team in this scenario to think they are in for an easy afternoon.
Luckily for Jim Larranaga’s club, this is exactly what they needed as tournament time approaches. When you’re at the top of the mountain, getting a big head is hard to avoid which is why a humbling experience like the Wake Forest loss will do good in reminding Miami (FL) no game is going to be easy from here on out.
The loss shouldn’t change the opinions of anybody on what this Hurricanes roster is capable of accomplishing in post-season tournaments. They took their opponents lightly and paid the ultimate price for it, but this senior loaded roster won’t want to make the same mistake twice. Miami (FL) had fallen victim to looking ahead to March, while forgetting everybody they’ll face between now and then are bringing their best effort to knock them off the top of the mountain. It doesn’t matter how talented a team is, if they come out with a lackluster performance against a motivated and determined squad, the results will always favor the focused team.
Wake Forest caught the Hurricanes napping during this afternoon contest, expect to see the real Miami (FL) team when they look to rebound on Feb. 27 against the Virginia Tech Hokies.
