Oklahoma Sooners Coach Lon Kruger Praises Players' Hearts

The Oklahoma Sooners (18-8, 9-5 Big 12) could be one of the most under-appreciated teams in the nation this year. Despite playing in the Big 12 and being competitive all year long,  nobody seems to talk about what a solid team this is.

Even stranger, no one is mentioning the terrific job head coach Lon Kruger has done rebuilding this program from the inside.

However, Kruger doesn’t want any of the credit, as he prefers to deflect all praise towards his players. Here are some quotes from Kruger about his players:

“Our seniors are good people. They all want to play, they all want to compete for minutes. They’re competitors. But at the heart of it all, they’re good people. It’s a credit to them.”

Kruger has specifically mentioned in the past that he tries to recruit “good people”, so they would fit easily in with the program he is trying to build.  Here is Kruger talking about the new transfer and freshmen players on his roster:

“Couldn’t be more pleased by the type of people they are. It’s not like they’re thinking about themselves only. They’re thinking about the team.”

Even in the preparation for games, Kruger still deflects all credit to his players:

“This group’s done such a good job getting each other ready to play. Opened games with good energy, good focus. That doesn’t just happen. You have to prepare.”

All of the things that Kruger said makes it very easy to root for him and his team. While most coaches love to throw their players under the bus after a loss, or take all the credit for a win, Kruger continues to let anyone who will listen know that it is his players, not he, who deserve all the accolades that come with winning.
