When the phrase “ACC basketball” is spoken, does Virginia Cavaliers basketball immediately pop to mind? I doubt it, and that is okay. Bigger, more historical programs likely scanter through your cranium. But it is time some of us, mostly myself, start to pay further attention to the Cavaliers, at least for this season.
Virginia is 19-8 on the season and seems destined to make the NCAA Tournament in a few weeks. But for the Cavaliers, something more simple was on their minds yesterday, revenge. Earlier this month the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets(14-12) pulled an upset over Virginia, one that the Cavaliers were not quick to forget.
Sunday proved to be Virginia’s moment to extract revenge, as they topple Georgia Tech 82-54. Junior Akil Mitchell reflected after the game about the need to pounce on Tech:
“They snuck one against us and we kind of took it personally. We had something we needed to prove to ourselves.”
Senior Jontel Evans also talked about going after Tech’s jugular during the game. As the Cavaliers were breaking a huddle, Evans reportedly said:
“We owed Georgia Tech one. Don’t let history repeat itself.”
Virginia did exactly what they wanted to do. They beat Georgia Tech in blowout fashion. Whatever questions that might have lingered because of games the Cavaliers lost(Like the upset earlier this month), have now been answered thanks to this drubbing.
Up next for Virginia is a show down against the Duke Blue Devils. Not only is ACC Tournament seeding on the line but NCAA Tournament ramifications, as the Cavaliers will look to continue to impress people who have otherwise not been paying attention.
