Wake Forest Demon Deacons Playing Role of ACC Dream Killers
By no stretch of any human’s imagination are the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (12-14, 5-9 ACC) a good basketball team. Despite starting their season beating the powerhouse program that is the Radford Highlanders, the Demon Deacons have found themselves playing for little more than pride. However, it is that pride that helped them upset the Miami Hurricanes just a few days ago.
This is the role Wake Forest can play the rest of the short ACC season. Only four games are remaining in the Demon Deacons regular season schedule, and while not all opponents are NCAA Tournament bound, they can ruin all four team’s dreams of mattering down the stretch. Well, with the exception of the Virginia Tech Hokies, they are already only having nightmares.
The entertaining, but disappointing, Florida State Seminoles are next up for Wake. While FSU has no legitimate chance of making the dance, Wake Forest can push them further down the ACC leader board and make them feel more inept than they already do. Also, extracting whatever future revenge their football team will not be able to do during the fall.
Then they face off against everyone’s favorite ACC team, the Maryland Terrapins. Well, okay, they aren’t everyone’s favorite but they are one of the few good programs in the conference who don’t inspire hatred from those outside of it. Maryland is playing with NCAA Tournament ramifications, so the Demon Deacons do have a chance to hurt any chances the Terrapins have at earning a pair of dancing slippers.
After that, they travel to play at the North Carolina State Wolfpack, another team with March Madness fever. The Wolfpack are likely already in the tournament, but if the Demon Deacons are up to it, handing them a loss would be a nice parting gift before the conference tournament starts.
Wake Forest doesn’t win a lot of ACC games, but when they do, the Demon Deacons are playing the role of dream killers.
