Michigan Wolverines' Wretched Road Stretch Continues

This may be one of the biggest upsets in college basketball all season long and of course it’s in a competitive conference like the Big Ten.

The Big Ten has been beating up on each other all season long. Whether it was Michigan State clobbering a No. 4 Michigan team two weeks ago, Indiana beating Michigan State at home, Minnesota taking down No. 1 Indiana or today, when lowly Penn State took down the Wolverines.

What’s most impressive about this win for the Nittany Lions is that they were winless in conference play. Yup, you heard me right, they were 0-14 in Big Ten play before taking down now 22-5 Michigan and the fourth-ranked team in the land.

How crazy this season is that the top teams in the country keep losing. This means just one thing. Any team can win the national title this season–except maybe Penn State–but the way this season is playing out, I wouldn’t be surprised if a surprise team won a conference tournament and made a deep run in March.

This lose is a confusing one for the Wolverines, who have now lost four consecutive road games and four of their last seven overall. Michigan is 4-5 on the road all season long. Yes, a laughable 4-5 on the road for a team that is ranked in the top five in the country.

Michigan has been struggling and this game was no exception. They held a 66-51 lead midway through the second half and looked to be easily on their way to the 11th win of the Big Ten season, but the Nittany Lions had other plans.

After a 33-12 to finish the game, the Nittany Lions improved to 1-14 on the Big Ten season and won their first conference game in over a year, having lost 18 straight before tonight’s upset win.

This will go down as one of the biggest upsets in recent memory of college basketball because of the extreme mismatch of talent between the two teams, but heart came out on top in this one.

It won’t be quite the luster of an Appalachian State over Michigan win, but it’s a mammoth upset nonetheless.
