Indiana, though, still had a shot to get their lead back until they allowed Minnesota to break their full-court press, which allowed junior guard Austin Hollins to slam the game home, plus drawing a foul in the process:
Indiana freshman guard Kevin Ferrell is the one who tried to stop Hollins, but fouled him instead. You can see Ferrell say to the refs after the foul was called, “what did I do?”
The answer is if you either let a guy dunk the ball and move on, or you foul him so he can’t make the basket. If you touch him while he is going up, the refs are going to call that every time.
For Indiana, this loss doesn’t really hurt them, as they still are at the top of Big 10 standings and shouldn’t fall too far from No. 1 in the national rankings. Minnesota on the other hand, gets a good resume win, and also allows coach Tubby Smith a little breather from scrutiny.
Minnesota will play a struggling Penn State team at home Saturday before ending their regular season with two road games. If they continue to improve and make big plays like Ferrell’s, they have a great chance of making the Big Dance.
