The Kansas Jayhawks had a special senior night for Jeff Withey, Travis Releford, Kevin Young and Elijah Johnson.
The Jayhawks stomped the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 79-42.
It was actually more of a dunk contest rather than a game. Withey, Young and freshman star Ben McLemore all got above the rim early and often in the first half, courtesy of Johnson’s stellar passing.
The Jayhawks went on a 32-10 run at the end of the first half to put the game away for good.
The only real question was which dunk was going to be on SportsCenter’s Top 10. Maybe all of them will.
Withey not only was on the receiving end of a spectacular alley oop in the first half, but he also made a 3-pointer, the first of his career.Withey also had an emphatic one-hand slam mid-way through the 2nd half when Head Coach Bill Self put his seniors in the game for their last few minutes in Phog Allen Fieldhouse.
The Jayhawks were so good, that Self even let them watch the video scoreboard when their highlight video with their career accomplishments on it during a media timeout.
That is quiet an feat for the Jayhawk seniors, for Self to allow a timeout to be “wasted” on something like that is remarkable. However, Self knows that he was honoring his seniors by giving them their moment and some more minutes in the second half when the game was essentially over.
Self then pulled each of his seniors together, one after the other, where they each got a well deserved round of applause.
Now the Jayhawks need to refocus and set their sights on their ninth consecutive Big 12 regular season title. The only team that stands in their way is the Baylor Bears.
