The Syracuse Orange (22-7, 10-6 Big East) are currently in the midst of a three game losing streak. Although, nobody should tell their crotchety head coach, Jim Boeheim. In fact, either the whole team is in denial or they have extreme confidence in themselves–as a slew of players think the streak is an abnormality, not a trend.
Here is crotchety(I mean that as an enduring term of love) Boeheim on the state of Orange hoops:
“ We’ve got a good team. I like our team. I think we’ve got a chance to be a good tournament team.’’
“I like what we can be. We’ve lost to three ranked teams. We haven’t played very good. We haven’t shot very good and we could have won two of the three. If we were getting beat by 15 or 20 points, I’d be worried. I’d be very worried. But we’re right there.’’
Boeheim isn’t wrong. It is not as if the Orange are losing to bums or getting blown out of the gym. People have gone as far to call the Orange overrated–as if a team is not allowed to lose to other really good teams.
Members of the team agree with Boeheim. Really, their confidence comes from Boeheim reassuring the players of their play. Here is Michael Carter-Williams on Boeheim and the team:
“I think Coach believes in us even though we’ve lost three in a row. I believe when we do play our game, we can beat anybody. All these games are close that we’ve lost.’’
For Syracuse fans it must be a sigh of relief type moment to know that Boeheim and the players still feel solid going into postseason play. The Orange have two regular season games left before the conference tournament starts. That is more than enough time to build on their confidence through winning games.
You know–instead of talking about it.
