At 22-6 on the season, the Oklahoma State Cowboys are quietly positioning themselves for a potential run within the NCAA Tournament.
The hype surrounding this team mostly focuses around star freshman Marcus Smart and deservedly so. Smart is looking like a potential player of the year candidate in the conference and his impact for head coach Travis Ford has been remarkable this season. In addition to Smart, sophomore wing forward LeBryan Nash also receives a good amount of credit and once again, that’s deservedly so.
However, what about the team’s high-flyer Markel Brown?
The junior forward has had an incredible season and without taking anything away from the production of both Smart and Nash, Brown is actually the team’s leading scorer at 15.7 points per game. Brown has scored in double-figures in all but three games this season for the Cowboys, a great level of consistency that has allowed Brown and the Cowboys to improve rapidly this season.
Oklahoma State has had a couple “down” years recently, but this certainly appears like the year that they are ready to break through and move forward. Their guard play has been incredible, but the importance of Brown to the team may just be even more of an issue for opposing teams than Smart or Nash.
The Cowboys have won ten of their last 11 games overall and will take a current, three-game winning streak on the road to Iowa State on Wednesday night. The game marks a must-win situation for the Cyclones, but we will see if the Cowboys can avoid running into any Hilton Magic.
