Akron Zips Should Dance Even if They Don’t Win the MAC Tournament
Remember the magical run of the Ohio Bobcats from a season ago?
Led in the back court by D.J. Cooper, the Bobcats made a special run to the Sweet 16 before bowing out to North Carolina. In fact, Ohio even had a shot late to win that game against the Tar Heels, which could’ve propelled their success even further to the Elite 8.
Now fast forward to 2013, the MAC is once again buzzing with potential Cinderellas. Despite losing head coach John Groce to Illinois, Cooper and the Bobcats are once again in the hunt, but they will likely need to win the conference tournament if they hope to dance. The story of the league this season however, has been that of the Akron Zips.
7-foot forward Zeke Marshall leads the way on the offensive and defensive end with a team-high 12.9 points and a shot-block presence that can certainly be game-changing. Overall, the Zips currently sit at 24-5 on the season with one final regular season game scheduled for Friday night.
Should Akron pick up a win in their finale, they will end the regular season with 25 wins and a conference crown. The clear cut favorite in the MAC Tournament however, will certainly have a target on their back as they have had for much of conference play.
Yet, even if the Zips are not able to win the MAC Tournament, Akron should still be a member of the 68-team field. Bubble teams should be on alert because this could be a situation in which one could burst if Akron gets bounced out of their league tournament.
Although there are no guarantees, Akron still has the resume and potential to be dangerous should they dance.
