As the college basketball season extends later and later in March, the terms “on the bubble”, “resume” and “RPI” become more and more synonymous with the term “March Madness”.
One of those teams that is “on the bubble” is the inconsistent Virginia Cavaliers.
Virginia began the 2012-13 regular season a pretty dominant 10-3 in their non-conference schedule. However, the Cavs dropped some pretty bad contests over the course of that schedule—a schedule that ranks just 303rd in strength in the nation. With bad losses to George Mason, Old Dominion, Wake Forest and Clemson among their nine losses, the Cavs will need to hope the selection committee values their record against better teams this season.
According to ESPN.com, Virginia has a 7-2 record against teams in the Top 100 of RPI this season. That is a pretty impressive addition to their resume.
Virginia should also be able to benefit from the voters that highly value the phrase “What have you done for me lately?” The Cavs’ upset victory over then No. 3 Duke just a week ago should still be fresh on the committee’s minds on Selection Sunday. Closing out their regular season with two solid victories will ultimately be the key for this ACC club to make the big dance.
The Cavaliers will close out the regular season with a road contest at Florida State on Thursday and will host Maryland for Senior Night on Sunday. Two victories in two winnable games would likely punch Virginia’s ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
