Can Middle Tennessee State Continue Its Dominance Through the Sun Belt Tournament?
Here are the numbers for Middle Tennessee State this season:
Overall Record: 27-4
Conference Record: 19-1
Current Winning Streak: 16
Bad Losses: Arkansas State (Jan. 3)
The Blue Raiders have done just about everything that they have needed to do to position themselves as a potential Cinderella story come March. Barring a major upset within the Sun Belt Tournament, Middle Tennessee State is the heavy favorite to take care of business starting later this week and carry that momentum straight through to the NCAA Tournament.
A 19-1 league record this season indicates the Blue Raiders’ dominance, that much is clear. A Jan. 3 third loss on the road to Arkansas State is the only bad blemish on Middle Tennessee State’s resume. With the conference tournament now their main focus, the Blue Raiders are looking to simply finish off what they have started in terms of running their winning streak straight into the Big Dance. A 16-game winning streak would look a lot better and a lot more inciting if it were extended to 19 within the next week or so.
Head coach Kermit Davis is quickly becoming one of the hotter names on the mid-major market. A qualification into the Big Dance is exactly what the Blue Raiders are destined for, but this team is not likely to just be satisfied with that. A well-balanced attack that features only scorer who averages double-figures is a credit to the depth and rotation that has made MTSU so dangerous this season.
There should be no denying the Blue Raiders’ potential as a Cinderella in this year’s NCAA Tournament, but for now, Middle Tennessee State should remain simply focused on simply extending their dominance within the Sun Belt Conference.
