The North Carolina State Wolfpack (22-8, 11-6 ACC) were on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble heading into their Wednesday night game. The Wolfpack did what they were supposed to do by beating down a bad Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and now find themselves off the bubble.
Beating a team as poor as the Demon Deacons didn’t vastly improve their RPI, nor did their BPI jump nine spots. But, it was a win at the end of the year while others teams are falling all around the nation.
That was the Wolfpack’s third victory in a row, and they have improved their overall record to 22-8. Their biggest victory this year was against the Duke Blue Devils, and they really don’t have a “bad” loss on the season.
Couple that with their RPI being 26 and their BPI of 20, this should be enough to get North Carolina State some dancing slippers, regardless of what happens the rest of the way.
As long as a slew of upsets don’t happen in mid-major conference tournaments, the Wolfpack are only playing for seeding the rest of the way. Now that they seem like a mortal-lock to go dancing, the time to start projecting their NCAA Tournament worth will soon get under way.
Oddly, the following applies to a few teams on the bubble as well as NC State: Now that the Wolfpack are likely in the tournament, the season that they had shows they can beat anyone in the nation.
The Wolfpack ranked in the top 10 in a major scoring category— field goal percentage (5th) — means they have the ability to put the ball in the basket. That is a trait very few college basketball teams in the nation have, and it makes the Wolfpack one of the scarier teams when the madness kicks-off.
