On Wednesday night, the Atlantic Sun Tournament kicked off with two of its four quarterfinal round contests.
The league’s top two seeds and top overall NCAA Tournament threats both advanced with victories on Wednesday night, as expected.
Florida-Gulf Coast, the league’s second overall seed, got a 22-point, nine rebound performance from Chase Fieler, advancing through to the semifinal round of the bracket. The Eagles advanced to 22-10 on the season with the victory, but more importantly are now one step closer to qualifying for their first NCAA Tournament in school history.
Florida-Gulf Coast’s biggest claim to fame this season was an early-season upset on the road at Miami (FL) and although the win represents their biggest such victory in school history, the focus obviously remains on an Atlantic Sun crown.
The Eagles will await the winner of the 6/3 match-up from within the bracket and will face either East Tennessee State or Stetson.
In the second quarterfinal match-up that was played on Wednesday night, the top seed in the bracket advanced with ease. Mercer pummeledLipscomb by a final score of 82-48, advancing through to the semifinal round. The Bears led by eight points at the break, but things quickly got out of hand in the second half.
At 22-10 on the season, Mercer now awaits the winner of the 4/5 match-up in the bracket and will face either USC-Upstate or Jacksonville.
Here is a look at Thursday night’s other quarterfinal match-ups and times:
Mar. 7, 2:30pm (EST): East Tennessee State vs. Stetson
Mar. 7, 8:30pm (EST): USC-Upstate vs. Jacksonville
