The top threats within the Northeast Conference all advanced through to the semifinal round on Wednesday night, as the league’s run towards its lone NCAA Tournament qualification has begun.
Within the eight-team bracket, fourth-seeded Bryant was the only higher seeded squad that did not advance past the quarterfinal round. Fifth-seeded Mount St. Mary’s simply did enough to secure a 75-69 victory and advance into the semifinal round. This, despite a 25-point performance from Bryant’s Alex Francis.
As for the other three quarterfinal match-ups, all three of the league’s top seeds advanced. Robert Morris got up big and never looked back in their 75-57 victory over St. Francis (PA). The same can be said about Wagner, who cruised to 72-50 win over Central Connecticut State. The Seahawks used a terrific first half effort on the defensive end, holding CCSU to only 19 points in the first 20 minutes of action.
As for Long Island, the two-time defending NEC Tournament champions, had some early struggles in their quarterfinal match-up against Quinnipiac. LIU used a 12-point second half advantage to cue a 91-83 come-from-behind victory on Wednesday night.C.J. Garner scored 30 points for the Blackbirds to keep alive their hopes at a three-peat.
