VCU Rams Win Naismith Student Section of the Year
Before tip off, that very same crowd shared some of the spotlight. The “Rowdy Rams” were named the 2013 Naismith Student Section of the Year, an award recognizing the most passionate fans in all of college basketball.
The Stu has a special feel to it, and in my opinion, there isn’t a better place to watch a college basketball game.
I remember calling my dad after attending my first Ram’s game earlier this year. I was blown away with the energy that filled the over-sized high school gymnasium that is the home to VCU. I’d never seen a fan base directly affect the outcome of a game, and they continued to do so each and every time I watched them play. I’ve been to plenty of ACC games, and have witnessed playoff atmospheres on both a collegiate and professional level. A regular season match-up at the Siegel Center tops them all.
The Rams are 16-2 at home this season, this isn’t some magical coincidence.
“We have the best students and fans in the country, and we are thrilled to now have national recognition of what we have always known,” said VCU Head Coach Shaka Smart. “Our student section stands by our team and is loud the entire game, giving us an unbelievable home-court advantage
VCU students and fans don’t have a football team to get excited about. Basketball is their bread and butter, and all of their energy pours into their home arena each night the Rams go to battle. It is great to see a school from the A-10 snag this award. Well done, Rowdy Rams.
