Bubble Watch: Iowa State Should Be Dancing

The Iowa State Cyclones (20-10, 10-7 Big 12) got a huge win over the No. 13 Oklahoma State Cowboys this week, and they now should be in the NCAA tournament field.

Iowa State is fourth in the nation in points per game (80), 23rd in the nation in rebounds per game (38.9) and 14th in the nation in assists per game (16.2). Although those numbers do not help the Cyclones one bit when it comes to making the dance, they are good to note. Unfortunately, it is all about the resume. Why don’t we take a look at yours, Iowa State.

The Cyclones only have one bad loss on the season, which came against conference opponent Texas Tech. However, they did lose three games in their non-conference schedule against Cincinnati, UNLV and Iowa. None of those games were played at home for this team.

The notable victories on the year for Iowa State were against BYU, Kansas State, Baylor (twice), Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

The Cyclones probably won’t enter the Big 12 tournament as the team to beat–not even by a long shot–but they have competed with the best teams in the conference all season long. The recent win against the Cowboys shows the tournament committee that this team deserves a bid for the dance.

As long as Iowa State does not go down to West Virginia in the last game of the season or have any major slip ups in the conference tournament, then it should be fine. The Cyclones have proved a lot this year and unlike most bubble teams, they do not need a deep run in their conference tournament to make the big dance, however, it would not hurt.
