The Duke Blue Devils are one of the most polarizing teams in the nation. In fact, unless you are an actual fan of the team, chances are that you have thrown your remote at your picture-box in anger over another Duke player making a three-pointer. The reason for such a strong hatred towards them is up for debate, but is most likely do to their perennial success.
Sure, there are plenty of things not to like about them, however, if they only won 15 games a year nobody would give a hoot.
Well, some Duke players have been awarded something, although I don’t think it is an award that will put you up-in-arms. Four Blue Devils players were named to the All-ACC Academic Team. Which in all honestly probably feels like an award you should get for going to school at Duke. I mean really, Duke is supposed to be as strong as an institution of higher learning as their is in the country — so we are not going to be in shock when they have multiple winners, right?
Seniors Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly along with freshmen Amile Jefferson and Rasheed Sulaimon were all announced as making the team by ACC commissioner John Swofford.
To “earn” the award a player must have at least a 3.00 GPA and maintain that bad boy during their entire academic career. I assume, since they go to Duke for schooling as well as hoops, that this is a pretty big deal for the players. However, this kind of award gets very little play nationally (Somewhere, Dick Vitale is doing handstands for the kids. We need not worry) . Maybe it should, though, as we constantly complain about student-athletes using programs to get to the pros.
You know, instead of the alternative, schools using kids for profit.
