March Madness: San Diego State Aztecs Can Make Case For No. 5 Seed

It will not be easy, but the San Diego State Aztecs can make a case for a N0. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. However, they will likely have to win out to do so.

It is hard to believe that this team sits in fourth place in the MWC, since it was ranked No. 20 in the preseason polls. However, New Mexico and Colorado State both have played above expectations this season, at least for the people running the rankings.

The Aztecs are currently 21-8 overall and 9-6 in the MWC. They will close out the season against Boise State, which is a game that both teams will really want to win. The Broncos are currently on the bubble, so they technically need it more, but the Aztecs want a better seed than No. 8, which is their current seed in ESPN Joe Lunardi’s current bracketology.

If San Diego State wins that game, it will enter its conference tournament with a lot of momentum and there is nobody who is counting this team out to win the MWC tournament.

This team has beaten UCLA and Indiana State on the year, along with Colorado State, New Mexico and Boise State in conference play. San Diego State has been one of the more consistent teams in the conference for some time now. Not winning the regular season title–they have no chance of doing so–or the conference tournament would be a huge disappointment for the Aztecs. So you can bet that they will bring their A game in the conference tourney. If they win it, then they will have a chance at a No. 5 seed in the big dance.
