How They Qualified: Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Champions

For the first time in school history, the Florida-Gulf Coast Eagles are dancing. By way of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, the Eagles became the first team to qualify for the 2013 NCAA Tournament with a – victory over the Mercer Bears.

The Eagles were the No. 2 seed within the conference tournament, clinching their spot within the Big Dance with victories over North Florida, Stetson, and then most recently, Mercer.

What You Need to Know:

Leading Scorer: Sherwood Brown (15.2 ppg)

Leading Rebounder: Sherwood Brown (6.3 rpg)

Leading Passer: Brett Comer (6.3 apg)

Bad Losses: Maine, East Tennessee State, Lipscomb (twice)

Good Wins: Miami (FL), Loyola (MD)

The Eagles biggest claim to fame this season came in their second game of the season back on Nov. 13 when FGCU upset Miami (FL) in Coral Gables. That game also represented their first win of the season and although it came all the way back in early November, it’s still a victory that marks the team’s biggest win in school history.

Florida-Gulf Coast ranks within the top 100 in points, rebounds, assists and field goal percentage on a national stage, so you know that they are an efficient team. Albeit they may not have the firepower to stun any of the country’s top teams within the NCAA Tournament, the 2012-13 season is certainly one that they will remember.

The Florida-Gulf Coast Eagles are dancing!
